How to Respond to a Narcissist's Text (Short Scripts)
Respond to a narcissist's text briefly, calmly and only to the facts, or not at all. Don't defend yourself, don't reopen the past, and don't ask questions that invite another round.
The 4 rules
- Wait. Their message is built for an instant reaction. Reply later, or never.
- Answer facts, ignore bait. Times, dates and decisions get an answer; insults don't.
- One or two sentences. Every extra sentence is something to twist.
- Close, don't open. End without a question.
Scripts by situation
Examples are written to illustrate common patterns.
| They send | What it's doing | You reply |
|---|---|---|
| "you always ruin everything" | Blame / generalizing | "I see it differently." or nothing |
| "after everything I've done for you" | Guilt trip | "I'm grateful. My answer is still no." |
| "I've changed, I'm in therapy now" | Hoovering | No reply, or "I'm glad. Take care." |
| "you're too sensitive" | Gaslighting / dismissing | "Okay." Don't debate your feelings. |
| "remember when you…" | Baiting with the past | "I'm not discussing that." |
| "I'm in the hospital, I need you" | Possible emergency hoover | "Please call 911 or a family member." |
| "pickup at 4 or are you too busy for your kid" | Real question + dig | "4 works. See you then." |
| "fine, I'll stay home forever so you're happy" | Martyrdom | "Okay. We can talk tomorrow." |
When not to reply at all
- The message has no time, date or decision in it.
- It's 2 AM and you're upset.
- It's an ex testing whether the door is open.
- You've already answered the same question.

Questions people ask
What is the best way to respond to a narcissist?
Briefly, calmly and only to facts. Don't defend your character, don't bring up the past, and don't ask questions that reopen the argument.
Should I respond to a narcissist at all?
If a message contains nothing you need to answer, silence is often best. Reply only to times, dates and decisions.
What do you say to shut down a narcissist?
There's no magic line. Short, boring replies work better than clever ones: 'I'm not discussing that.' 'Okay.' 'Pickup is at 5.'
How do I reply to a narcissist ex trying to come back?
Usually not at all. Any reply, even 'leave me alone', tells them the door is open. If you must: 'No. Take care.'
Why do I feel so anxious replying?
Their messages are built to provoke a reaction. Waiting before replying, and writing a short draft first, takes the urgency out.
